Printable Graph Paper

Make the exact graph paper you need and download it as a PDF. Choose the square size in inches or millimeters, add heavier lines every few squares, pick a line color and weight, and print on US Letter or A4. Every PDF is drawn to scale, so a 1/4 inch square really prints at 1/4 inch.

How to make and print graph paper

  1. Choose a square size. Tap a common size or type your own in inches or millimeters, anywhere from 1 mm to 2 inches.
  2. Add heavier lines if you want them. A bolder line every 4, 5 or 10 squares makes counting easier. With 1/4 inch squares, every 4th line marks whole inches; with 1 mm squares, every 10th marks centimeters.
  3. Pick paper, color and weight. Match the paper size to what is in your printer. The preview updates as you change anything.
  4. Download and print at 100%. Open the PDF and print with “Actual size” selected. Print as many copies as you need.

Which grid size should I use?

  • 1/4 inch (4 squares per inch): the familiar US school grid, also called quad paper; good for math homework, graphing equations, bar charts and simple floor plans.
  • 1/5 and 1/10 inch: finer grids; 5 and 10 squares per inch are common on engineering paper.
  • 1/2 inch and 1 inch: big squares for young children learning to line up numbers, and for large-scale drawing or quilt planning.
  • 5 mm and 1 cm: the standard metric grids for school maths, bullet-journal style planning and scaled drawings in centimeters.
  • 1 mm and 2 mm: precise plotting and drafting. Turn on a heavier line every 10 (1 mm) or 5 (2 mm) squares so each centimeter stands out.

Check that it printed to scale

Printers and PDF viewers often shrink pages by a few percent to fit their margins, and the difference is easy to miss until a drawing doesn't line up. After printing, lay a ruler along the grid and measure a run of squares rather than one: 10 squares of 1/4 inch should span 2.5 inches, and 20 squares of 5 mm should span 10 cm. If it comes up short, print again with the scale set to 100% or “Actual size”.

Printable graph paper FAQ

Why are my printed squares the wrong size?

Your printer is probably scaling the page. In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% or choose "Actual size" instead of "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". Then measure a few squares with a ruler: ten 1/4 inch squares should measure exactly 2.5 inches.

What size is standard graph paper?

There isn't one standard. In the US and Canada, quad (quadrille) paper usually has 2, 4 or 5 squares per inch, and 4 per inch (1/4 inch squares) is the familiar school grid. Engineering paper has 4, 5 or 10 squares per inch. In Europe, school paper usually has 5 mm squares, and millimeter paper has 10 squares per centimeter.

Should I print on Letter or A4?

Pick the paper that is in your printer. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches and A4 is 210 × 297 mm, slightly narrower and taller. If you print a Letter PDF on A4 paper (or the other way round), the printer will either crop the edge or shrink the page, which changes the square size.

Is the PDF free to use?

Yes. Download and print as many copies as you like for school, work or personal projects. No sign-up, no watermark.

Why is there a white border around the grid?

Most home and office printers can't print right to the edge of the paper, so the grid stays at least 1/4 inch from every edge. The grid is made of whole squares and centered on the page, which is why the border can be slightly wider on one pair of sides.

Which line color prints best?

Gray and light blue keep the grid in the background so your writing stands out, and they still show on black-and-white printers. Use black with a bold weight if you plan to photocopy the sheet.
